Which Hubble camera was installed during Servicing Mission 3B in 2002?

The story behind the answer

The Advanced Camera for Surveys was the Hubble camera installed during Servicing Mission 3B in 2002.

The instrument launched aboard space shuttle Columbia on March 1, 2002, as part of STS-109. Astronauts installed it on Hubble on March 7, replacing the Faint Object Camera, which had been one of the telescope’s original instruments since launch.

ACS is a third-generation imaging instrument designed for broad surveys of galaxies, galaxy clusters, and other distant objects. Its capabilities cover ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelengths through multiple channels, making it especially useful for wide-field imaging.

The camera later suffered serious electronic failures in 2006 and 2007. During Servicing Mission 4 in 2009, astronauts restored its Wide Field Channel, although its High Resolution Channel remained unavailable. The Wide Field Camera 3 is an easy alternative to confuse with ACS, but WFC3 was installed seven years later, in 2009.
