Which honor was J.K. Rowling appointed a Companion of in 2017?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2017.

The appointment recognized her services to literature and philanthropy. The Companions of Honour is a British order founded in 1917 by King George V, and it is limited to a small number of members at any one time.

Rowling had previously received other major British honors. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, in 2001. The 2017 appointment was therefore a separate recognition, not a change to her earlier OBE.

The order’s members may use the post-nominal letters CH. It recognizes notable achievements in the arts, science, medicine, or government, and membership is distinct from a knighthood or damehood.
