Floo powder lets characters travel through fireplaces in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
A traveler throws the magical powder into a lit fireplace, steps into the resulting green flames and clearly states a destination. The Floo Network then connects fireplaces, allowing people to travel between approved locations. The method is also used for communication when only the traveler’s head appears in the fire.
The system is convenient but not completely safe or private. Characters can mispronounce a destination, arrive at an unintended fireplace or encounter restrictions on where the network operates. The Ministry of Magic regulates parts of the wizarding transportation system.
Floo powder is distinct from Apparition, another form of magical travel that involves disappearing from one place and appearing in another. It is also unrelated to Portkeys, enchanted objects that transport people when touched. These different methods help distinguish the wizarding world’s travel options.
