Which Honda motorcycle, introduced in 1958 as the C100, became the world’s best-selling motorcycle line?

The story behind the answer

The Honda Super Cub is the motorcycle line introduced in 1958 as the C100. Honda designed it as a lightweight, approachable motorcycle that could serve commuters, families, and small businesses.

Its step-through frame, automatic centrifugal clutch, enclosed chain, and leg shields made it easier to ride and maintain than many conventional motorcycles. The 49 cc four-stroke engine was economical and reliable, helping the model spread far beyond Japan.

The Super Cub name covers a large family of related models rather than one unchanged machine. Production has continued for decades, with versions built in numerous countries. Its enormous global output is why it is frequently described as the best-selling motor vehicle of all time, although some sources use narrower definitions of “motor vehicle.”

The Honda Cub is not the same motorcycle as Honda’s larger Dream models, which preceded it in the company’s early product history.
