Which Hogwarts house does Luna Lovegood belong to in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

Luna Lovegood belongs to Ravenclaw in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

Luna is introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as a Hogwarts student in the year below Harry. Ravenclaw is traditionally associated with intelligence, creativity, learning, and individuality. Luna’s unusual ideas and calm independence make her one of the house’s most distinctive members.

Readers sometimes assume Luna is a Gryffindor because she becomes a loyal ally of Harry, Ron, and Hermione and fights alongside them. House membership, however, is determined by the Sorting Hat and does not prevent students from forming friendships across house boundaries.

Luna later takes part in the resistance against Dolores Umbridge and joins the fight at the Battle of Hogwarts. Her father, Xenophilius Lovegood, edits The Quibbler, a wizarding publication that supports Harry’s account of Voldemort’s return.
