Which historical figure is venerated as the Taoist “Medicine King”? Sun Simiao.

Sun Simiao was a Chinese physician and writer associated with the Sui and Tang dynasties. He lived from 581 to 682 and became known as Yaowang, or “Medicine King,” because of his medical learning, extensive writings, and compassion toward patients. Later religious tradition also honored him as a Daoist medical immortal, although his life and thought included important Buddhist connections as well.

His best-known works include Essential Formulas Worth a Thousand Pieces of Gold, which contains roughly 5,300 medicinal recipes, and a supplementary collection of about 2,000 more. He also wrote “On the Absolute Sincerity of Great Physicians,” an ethical passage emphasizing that doctors should treat patients equally regardless of status, wealth, nationality, or personal appearance.

Bian Que and Hua Tuo were also celebrated physicians, but they are not the standard answer to the title Medicine King. Li Tieguai is one of the Eight Immortals, not the historical doctor traditionally identified as Yaowang.
