Which historical civilization and region provide the main setting for Assassin's Creed Origins?

The story behind the answer

Ancient Egypt provides the main historical setting for Assassin's Creed Origins.

The game takes place during the first century BCE, near the end of the Ptolemaic period. Players explore locations such as Alexandria, Memphis, Cyrene, and the Giza plateau while following Bayek of Siwa.

Bayek is a Medjay, a traditional Egyptian protector, whose personal mission leads to the formation of the Hidden Ones. That organization is presented as the historical predecessor of the later Assassin Brotherhood.

Assassin's Creed Origins was released in 2017 and changed the series toward role-playing mechanics. Its setting is not Ancient Greece, which is the principal setting of Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The game also portrays Roman influence in Egypt, including the involvement of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra.
