Which historic racer does Doc Hudson represent in Pixar’s Cars?

The story behind the answer

Doc Hudson represents the Fabulous Hudson Hornet in Pixar’s Cars.

Doc’s racing identity is the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a fictionalized version of the Hudson Hornet stock car. In the film’s history, he was a celebrated champion before a crash ended his racing career and caused him to withdraw from the public spotlight.

The real Hudson Hornet was a successful American automobile associated with stock-car racing in the early 1950s. Drivers such as Herb Thomas, Tim Flock, and Marshall Teague helped make the model famous in early NASCAR competition. Pixar’s character combines that real car’s racing reputation with an original personal story.

Doc is voiced by Paul Newman and serves as Lightning McQueen’s mentor. “The King,” voiced by Richard Petty, is a separate Cars character based on the Plymouth Superbird and associated with the film’s racing world. The Fabulous Hudson Hornet therefore identifies Doc’s racing persona, not another champion in the film.
