The Fugees released the 1996 album The Score, which featured “Killing Me Softly.”
The Fugees were a New Jersey-based group consisting of Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras Michel. The Score was their second studio album and followed the 1994 debut Blunted on Reality. Released on February 13, 1996, it combined rap with soul, reggae, and melodic vocal arrangements.
“Killing Me Softly,” performed primarily by Lauryn Hill, reworked the Roberta Flack hit “Killing Me Softly with His Song.” The Fugees version became an international success, although it was released as a single in many territories under the title “Killing Me Softly with His Song.” Other major tracks included “Ready or Not” and “Fu-Gee-La.”
The album won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 1997. It was the group’s final studio album before the members pursued separate careers, making its success especially significant in their short recording history.
