The song’s title refers to splitting the cost of marijuana, with each person contributing five dollars toward a larger purchase. Its relaxed but instantly memorable chorus helped turn that premise into a widely known anthem. R&B singer Michael Marshall provided prominent vocals, while Tone Capone produced the track.
“I Got 5 on It” was released as the lead single from Luniz’s debut album, Operation Stackola. It reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and performed strongly internationally, including top-three placements in the United Kingdom and Germany. The single was certified platinum in the United States in 1995.
The song’s afterlife extended beyond its original party setting. Its distinctive melody and rhythm were used in the 2019 film Us, where a slowed and ominous remix became part of the movie’s unsettling soundscape. That placement introduced the Luniz classic to a new generation.
