In Hindu belief, the river is worshipped in feminine form as the goddess Yamuna. Early texts call her Yami, while later literature also uses the name Kalindi. She is traditionally described as the daughter of Surya, the sun god, and Saranyu or Sanjna, and as the twin sister of Yama, the deity associated with death and moral judgment.

Yamuna has a particularly strong connection with Krishna because the river flows through the Braj region, including Mathura and Vrindavan, locations central to stories of his childhood. One famous legend tells of Krishna subduing the serpent Kaliya in the river. Another associates the river’s dark appearance with Krishna or with other sacred legends.
