Ushas is the Hindu goddess of dawn.

Ushas is a prominent goddess in Vedic Hinduism and personifies the arrival of daylight. The Rigveda repeatedly praises her as the radiant power that drives away darkness, awakens living beings, opens paths, and sets people to their daily duties. She is often described as a daughter of Dyaus, the Sky Father, and is associated with the renewing rhythm of each morning.

Her importance is especially visible in the Rigveda, where about 40 hymns are dedicated to her. Ushas is also connected linguistically with the Proto-Indo-European dawn goddess *h₂ausōs; related figures include Greek Eos and Roman Aurora. This makes her part of a very old Indo-European dawn tradition.

A common mix-up is Ratri, who personifies night and is frequently presented as Ushas’s sister. Prithvi is the Earth goddess, while Aditi is a motherly cosmic deity and the mother of several gods. Ushas is specifically the dawn, not simply sunlight or the sky.
