Hanuman is a divine vanara and Rama’s devoted companion in the Ramayana. After Ravana abducts Rama’s wife, Sita, Hanuman joins Rama and Lakshmana in their search. His courage, intelligence and loyalty make him the epic’s model devotee, combining heroic strength with selfless service.

Hanuman’s most famous feat is his leap across the sea to Lanka, where he finds Sita and gives her Rama’s ring as proof that help is coming. He later helps Rama’s army fight Ravana and is associated with the construction of the bridge to Lanka. In many tellings, he also carries an entire mountain after failing to identify the medicinal herb needed to save Lakshmana.

Traditions differ about Hanuman’s divine lineage. He is commonly described as the son of Anjana and Kesari, with Vayu, the wind god, as his spiritual father; some Shaiva traditions identify him as an aspect or incarnation of Shiva. Jambavan, Sugriva and Vali are important Ramayana figures, but none is the central monkey deity celebrated as Rama’s supreme devotee.
