The Hindu deity associated with the constellation of the Pleiades is Kartikeya, also known as Skanda or Murugan. The stars are identified with the Krittikas, the celestial mothers or nursemaids who raised him.
In a widespread birth story, divine sparks connected with Shiva eventually become six infants. The Krittikas nurture the children, and Parvati later unites them into one six-faced deity. Kartikeya’s name literally means “of the Krittikas,” linking him directly to the Pleiades and explaining why the star group is central to his mythology.
The association is mythological and cultural rather than a claim that Kartikeya is himself a star or constellation. Different texts vary on the details of his birth: some emphasize Shiva and Parvati, while others give Agni a major role in carrying or preserving the divine essence. That variation can cause confusion, but Agni is not the standard answer to this constellation question. Kartikeya is also recognized as a war god, commander of the devas, and rider of a peacock.
