Patroclus was a Greek hero of the Trojan War and the close companion of Achilles. When the Trojans threatened the Greek ships, Patroclus persuaded Achilles to let him enter battle wearing Achilles’s armor. The disguise was meant to frighten the Trojans and drive them away, but Achilles warned him not to pursue them too far.

Patroclus ignored that limit and advanced toward Troy. He killed several Trojan allies, including Sarpedon, but Apollo struck or disoriented him. The Trojan warrior Euphorbus then wounded him, and Hector delivered the fatal blow with a spear. Thus Hector is the standard answer, even though the Iliad presents Patroclus’s death as the result of several combatants’ actions.

Patroclus’s death transformed the war. Achilles, devastated and enraged, returned to battle after refusing to fight because of his quarrel with Agamemnon. Achilles later killed Hector, creating the famous revenge sequence at the center of Homer’s Iliad. Ajax and Menelaus helped recover Patroclus’s body for funeral rites.
