Which Greek hero attempted to fly to Mount Olympus on Pegasus?
Answer
Bellerophon
Answer
Bellerophon
Bellerophon was the Greek hero who attempted to fly to Mount Olympus on Pegasus.
After taming the winged horse, Bellerophon became famous for defeating the fire-breathing Chimera and other enemies. His growing confidence turned into hubris: believing his heroic status entitled him to join the gods, he tried to ride Pegasus up to Olympus.
In a widely told version, Zeus sent a gadfly to sting Pegasus. Bellerophon was thrown from the horse and fell back toward Earth, while Pegasus continued to Olympus and became associated with Zeus. The story explains why Bellerophon, rather than Icarus, is the hero linked specifically with Pegasus and Olympus. Icarus flew with wax-and-feather wings, while Perseus is sometimes shown riding Pegasus in later artistic traditions, creating a common mix-up.
