Which hero tamed the winged horse Pegasus?

Bellerophon tamed the winged horse Pegasus and rode him into battle against the fire-breathing Chimaera.

Pegasus was born from the blood of Medusa after Perseus decapitated her, according to the most familiar mythic tradition. Bellerophon wanted to capture the extraordinary horse, but Pegasus could not be approached easily. Athena helped him by providing a magical bridle; other ancient accounts instead say that she or Poseidon brought Pegasus already tamed.

Mounted on Pegasus, Bellerophon attacked the Chimaera from the air. He defeated the monster by fitting a lump of lead to his spear; the Chimaera’s fiery breath melted the lead, blocking its throat. Bellerophon later became overconfident and tried to fly Pegasus to Mount Olympus. Zeus sent a gadfly that caused the horse to buck him off, and Bellerophon fell back to Earth. Perseus is often confused with him because both heroes are linked to flying creatures and Medusa, but Pegasus belongs chiefly to Bellerophon’s story.
