Which hero did Hermes give a magical sword to?

The story behind the answer

Hermes gave Perseus a magical sword.

Perseus needed divine equipment before confronting Medusa, the Gorgon whose gaze turned onlookers to stone. In the best-known mythic account, Hermes lent him the harpe, a sharp, sickle-shaped sword capable of cutting through Medusa’s formidable defenses. Hermes also supplied winged sandals, while Athena contributed a polished shield that allowed Perseus to attack without looking directly at Medusa.

The sword is sometimes described as a gift and sometimes as equipment lent by Hermes, but that distinction does not change the hero who received it. Perseus used the weapon to sever Medusa’s head while she slept. He then escaped with the head, using it as a weapon against later enemies before presenting it to Athena.

A common mix-up is confusing Hermes’ sword with the other magical objects in the story: Hades’ cap provided invisibility, the winged sandals enabled flight, and the kibisis carried Medusa’s head. The sword belongs specifically to Perseus’ quest.
