“As It Was” spent 15 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022.
The synth-pop song was the lead single from Harry Styles’s third studio album, Harry’s House. It debuted at No. 1 in April 2022 and returned to the summit repeatedly, making it one of the year’s defining global pop hits.
Styles wrote the song with Thomas Hull and producers Tyler Johnson and Kid Harpoon. Its lyrics reflect change, isolation, and the passage of time, while its bright production contrasts with its more reflective subject matter.
“Watermelon Sugar” was Styles’s first Hot 100 No. 1, but it spent only one week at the top. “As It Was” achieved the much longer 15-week reign.
