Which Harry Potter novel introduces the character Luna Lovegood?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix introduces Luna Lovegood in J.K. Rowling’s series.

Published in 2003, the fifth novel features Luna as a Ravenclaw student who joins Harry’s circle of allies. She is known for her unusual beliefs, direct manner and loyalty, and she becomes an important member of Dumbledore’s Army.

Luna first appears when Harry travels to Hogwarts on the train. Her distinctive personality and imaginative explanations make her memorable, but the novels also show her courage and perceptiveness. She participates in major conflicts against Voldemort’s followers.

The character is sometimes mistakenly associated with the fourth novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, because that book introduces several other important students and expands the school’s international setting. Luna does not appear until the fifth main installment.
