Which Harry Potter house did J.K. Rowling create as the home of Harry, Ron, and Hermione?

The story behind the answer

Gryffindor is the Hogwarts house containing Harry, Ron, and Hermione in J.K. Rowling’s books.

The house was founded by Godric Gryffindor and is associated especially with courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger are sorted into Gryffindor during their first year at Hogwarts, forming the central friendship of the series.

The other three houses are Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Sorting is based on the values and potential recognized by the Sorting Hat, although students can also influence the decision. This is why house identity is more nuanced than a simple personality label.

Gryffindor’s colors are scarlet and gold, and its symbolic animal is the lion. The house’s head during much of Harry’s time at Hogwarts is Minerva McGonagall, who also teaches Transfiguration.
