Which Harry Potter film has the longest theatrical runtime?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets has the longest theatrical runtime of the eight Harry Potter films, running for 161 minutes.

Directed by Chris Columbus, the film is the second entry in the series and adapts J. K. Rowling’s 1998 novel. Its extended running time accommodates several storylines, including the opening of the Chamber, the attacks on students, Tom Riddle’s diary, and the mystery surrounding Harry’s ability to speak Parseltongue.

The film’s 161-minute length is often confused with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which is also one of the longer entries at 157 minutes. The later films generally became shorter in theatrical form, although Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was divided into two separate releases.

The Chamber of Secrets was released in 2002 and again starred Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson as the central trio.
