Which film studio distributed the Harry Potter films?

The story behind the answer

Warner Bros. Pictures distributed the Harry Potter films.

Warner Bros. acquired the film rights to Rowling’s first four Harry Potter novels in 1999 and developed the adaptations with the author’s participation. The studio released the eight main films internationally between 2001 and 2011.

The distribution relationship made Warner Bros. the central studio behind the film series, although production involved numerous companies and filming took place primarily in the United Kingdom. Warner Bros. also continued its involvement with the later Fantastic Beasts films.

The studio should not be confused with Universal Pictures, which operates major Harry Potter-themed attractions at its parks. Universal’s theme-park connection is separate from the original film distribution arrangement. The films themselves were released by Warner Bros. Pictures.
