Halo 2 introduced Tartarus as a major antagonist. Tartarus is the powerful Jiralhanae, or Brute, chieftain who serves the Covenant leadership and becomes a central enemy during the game’s story.
In Halo 2, Tartarus succeeds his uncle Maccabeus as chieftain of the Brutes. The Prophet of Truth gives him the powerful Gravity Hammer and assigns him important missions connected to the activation of the Halo installations. His loyalty to the Covenant’s religious hierarchy places him in direct conflict with the Arbiter.
Tartarus is especially important because Halo 2 alternates between Master Chief’s missions and the Arbiter’s perspective. The character is not simply a recurring combat unit: he drives the story’s internal Covenant conflict and appears in the final confrontation at Installation 05. Later Halo games feature other Brute leaders, but Tartarus remains uniquely associated with Halo 2.
