Which group released the 1988 album By All Means Necessary, featuring “My Philosophy”?

Boogie Down Productions released the 1988 album By All Means Necessary, featuring “My Philosophy.”

The album followed the death of BDP member Scott La Rock, who was killed in 1987. KRS-One continued the group with a more direct, socially aware style, and the album’s title alludes to Malcolm X’s political writing.

“My Philosophy” became one of KRS-One’s signature performances. Other notable tracks include “Stop the Violence” and “Illegal Business,” which address violence, exploitation, and the music industry.

The record is sometimes confused with BDP’s debut, Criminal Minded, released in 1987. Criminal Minded is associated with the early Bronx sound and foundational diss records, while By All Means Necessary reflects KRS-One’s development as a political and educational voice.
