Chic released “Le Freak,” which became the best-selling single in Atlantic Records’ history at the time.
Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote the song, and Chic recorded it for their 1978 album C’est Chic. The track’s distinctive guitar riff, tight rhythm section, and repeated vocal hook made it a defining example of late-1970s disco-funk.
The song was originally developed with a different chorus after Rodgers and Edwards were reportedly turned away from Studio 54 on New Year’s Eve. The released version changed the hook into the more radio-friendly “Le Freak.” It topped the Billboard Hot 100 three times in 1979 because of unusual chart movement after falling and returning to number one.
“Le Freak” was certified platinum in the United States and later entered the Grammy Hall of Fame. Its success also helped establish Rodgers and Edwards as influential songwriters and producers beyond Chic’s own recordings.
