Which Grimm tale features sisters named Snow-White and Rose-Red?

The story behind the answer

The Grimm tale featuring sisters named Snow-White and Rose-Red is “Snow-White and Rose-Red.”

The sisters live with their widowed mother in a cottage near the forest. Snow-White is portrayed as quiet and domestic, while Rose-Red is more lively and adventurous. Their close bond and kindness are central to the story, especially when they welcome a bear into their home during winter.

The bear later departs to guard treasure from a hostile dwarf. During summer, the girls repeatedly rescue that dwarf from danger, although he responds with ingratitude. Eventually the bear kills the dwarf and is transformed into a prince whose enchantment the dwarf had caused.

This tale is KHM 161 and is classified as ATU 426, “The Two Girls, the Bear, and the Dwarf.” It is not the same story as “Snow White,” the tale of the jealous queen and seven dwarfs. The similar English names can cause confusion; in German, the heroine of the better-known story is Schneewittchen, while these sisters are Schneeweißchen and Rosenrot.
