Which Grimm fairy tale is KHM 18?

The story behind the answer

KHM 18 is “The Straw, the Coal, and the Bean.”

The tale begins when a bean falls from a cooking pot beside a piece of straw, while a hot coal jumps out of the fire. The three escape together and travel until they reach a river. The straw stretches across the water as a bridge, but the coal catches fire to it, causing both to fall into the stream.

The bean laughs so hard at the mishap that its side bursts. A passing tailor sews the bean back together with black thread, which the story humorously presents as the reason beans have a dark seam.

The tale appeared as the eighteenth story in the Brothers Grimm’s collection and is also identified as Aarne–Thompson type 295. Readers sometimes confuse its title with variants that use “charcoal” instead of “coal”; translations differ in wording, but the three central objects remain the same. Its short comic plot is notably gentler and more absurd than many darker Grimm narratives.
