Which Grimm fairy tale involves a miller's daughter who must spin straw into gold?
Answer
Rumpelstiltskin
Answer
Rumpelstiltskin
The Grimm fairy tale in which a miller’s daughter must spin straw into gold is Rumpelstiltskin. The mysterious little man performs the impossible task, but demands increasingly valuable payment for his help.
The miller’s daughter is locked in a room filled with straw after her father boasts that she can turn it into gold. Rumpelstiltskin first accepts a necklace and then a ring. When she has nothing left to offer, he demands her first child. After she becomes queen, he returns to claim the baby.
He finally offers a way out: she must guess his name. Her messengers fail to identify it, but she discovers him in the forest singing about his secret identity. When she names him Rumpelstiltskin, the bargain is broken. The ending became harsher in later Grimm editions; the 1812 version and the 1857 version do not end identically.
The tale is KHM 55 in the Grimm collection. The Star Talers and The Golden Goose are separate Grimm stories, while “The Spinning Woman” is not the canonical title of this tale.
