Which Greek hero killed the Minotaur?

Theseus killed the Minotaur, the half-man, half-bull monster imprisoned in the Labyrinth on Crete. The creature was associated with King Minos, whose architect Daedalus designed the maze so that the Minotaur could not escape. Athens was required to send young people to Crete as tribute, where they faced the monster.

Theseus volunteered to join the tribute party and promised his father, Aegeus, that he would use white sails if he survived. In Crete, Ariadne, Minos's daughter, fell in love with him and gave him a ball of thread. Theseus used it to mark his route through the Labyrinth, then overcame and killed the Minotaur before leading the captives back out.

The return journey brought tragedy. Theseus forgot to change the ship's black sails to white, so Aegeus believed his son had died and threw himself into the sea, which myth says became the Aegean Sea. Theseus is also remembered as a legendary unifier of Attica and king of Athens.
