Which Greek god is the messenger of the gods?

Hermes is the Greek god traditionally described as the messenger and herald of the gods. He carried messages between the divine world, mortals and, in some myths, the underworld.

Hermes was the son of Zeus and Maia and one of the Twelve Olympians. His speed and mobility were symbolized by winged sandals and, in later artistic traditions, a winged cap. He was also associated with travelers, roads, merchants, thieves, language, athletic contests and boundaries.

His role was broader than simply delivering messages. As a psychopomp, Hermes guided souls to the afterlife, and his trickster character appears vividly in the Homeric Hymn to Hermes, where he steals Apollo’s cattle as a newborn and invents the lyre. The Romans identified him with Mercury, which is why Mercury is the matching Roman answer.
