Which Greek deity is Pandora’s husband’s brother in Hesiod’s account?

The story behind the answer

In Hesiod’s account, Prometheus is the brother of Pandora’s husband, Epimetheus.

Prometheus and Epimetheus are both Titans, and their relationship helps frame the Pandora story. Prometheus is associated with foresight and is famous for stealing fire for humanity, while Epimetheus is associated with hindsight and makes the poorly considered decision to accept Pandora.

Hesiod’s Works and Days says that Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept anything from Zeus. Epimetheus nevertheless accepted Pandora, who had been created and adorned by the gods. The warning and its rejection explain why the brothers’ contrasting names matter to the narrative.

Prometheus is sometimes described in modern culture as Pandora’s husband or creator, but those are different relationships. In the traditional myth, Pandora is linked romantically with Epimetheus, while Prometheus is Epimetheus’s brother and adviser.
