In the 1996 film Star Trek: First Contact, the Borg sphere’s target is Earth.
The film opens during a battle near Earth in the year 2373. The Borg travel back in time to prevent humanity’s first contact with an extraterrestrial civilization, hoping to alter history and assimilate Earth before the Federation can develop. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise-E follow them through the temporal vortex.
The title evokes the historic first meeting between humans and the Vulcans, which occurs on April 5, 2063. Zefram Cochrane launches the Phoenix, humanity’s first warp-capable spacecraft, and its flight attracts Vulcan attention. The Borg’s attack threatens that event, so the Enterprise crew must defend Earth’s past as well as its future.
The film is sometimes associated with Pandora because “Pandora’s box” is the name of the Borg time-traveling plan in early production material and related discussion, but the finished movie’s central target is Earth. Patrick Stewart stars as Picard, and Jonathan Frakes directed the film.
