Which Great Lake was the site of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie?
Answer
Lake Erie
Answer
Lake Erie
The 1813 Battle of Lake Erie took place on Lake Erie.
The battle was fought on 10 September 1813 during the War of 1812, near the western end of the lake. United States naval forces commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry defeated a British squadron led by Robert Heriot Barclay. Perry reported the victory with the famous message, “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”
Control of Lake Erie helped the United States maintain its position in the Old Northwest. The victory also enabled American forces to transport troops and supplies and contributed to the British evacuation of Detroit.
The battle is sometimes confused with the later Battle of the Thames, fought on land in present-day Ontario. The naval engagement itself occurred on Lake Erie, and several of its vessels have since become archaeological and heritage subjects.
