Which Great Lake is the warmest on average?
Answer
Lake Erie
Answer
Lake Erie
Lake Erie is generally the warmest of the Great Lakes on average.
Its relatively shallow basin allows sunlight to warm a large proportion of the water column during summer. Lake Erie has an average depth of only about 19 metres, far less than the other Great Lakes, so its temperature responds more quickly to seasonal changes.
The lake can also freeze more extensively in winter than the deeper Great Lakes, especially in its western basin. Seasonal temperature differences affect fish habitats, shipping conditions, algae growth, and recreational use.
“Warmest” does not mean Lake Erie is always warmer at every location or every time of year. Weather, wind, water depth, and ice cover create local differences. Lake Superior, by contrast, remains much colder because of its great depth and northern position.
