Which Great Lake is the easternmost of North America’s five Great Lakes?
Answer
Lake Ontario
Answer
Lake Ontario
Lake Ontario is the easternmost of North America’s five Great Lakes.
It lies between the Canadian province of Ontario and New York State. Water from Lake Ontario flows east through the St. Lawrence River, eventually reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Its eastern position makes it the final Great Lake in the chain leading toward the sea.
Lake Ontario is also the smallest Great Lake by surface area, although it is deeper than Lake Erie. Toronto, Hamilton, Rochester, and Kingston are among the important cities on or near its shores.
The lake should not be confused with Lake Erie, which lies immediately to its west. Niagara Falls and the Niagara River connect the two lakes, while the Welland Canal provides a navigable route around the falls.
