Lake Huron is the Great Lake associated with Manitoulin Island, the world’s largest freshwater island.
Manitoulin Island lies in the northern part of Lake Huron within Ontario, Canada. It covers about 2,766 square kilometres and is separated from the mainland by the North Channel. The island itself contains numerous inland lakes, including Lake Manitou, often described as the world’s largest lake on a freshwater island.
Lake Huron has an unusually complex shoreline, with bays, channels, islands, and the broad Georgian Bay. Its shoreline would be the longest of the Great Lakes if its many islands and bays are included in the measurement, although shoreline figures vary by measuring method.
Lake Huron is connected to Lake Michigan by the Straits of Mackinac. Because the two lakes have the same water level and are hydrologically one basin, some geographic discussions treat them as a single lake system.
