Which Great Lake has the greatest water volume?
Answer
Lake Superior
Answer
Lake Superior
Lake Superior has the greatest water volume of the five Great Lakes. It contains about 12,100 cubic kilometres of water, more than the other four Great Lakes combined.
Superior is also the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, covering roughly 82,100 square kilometres. Its name comes from the French lac Supérieur, meaning “upper lake,” referring to its position north of Lake Huron.
The lake borders Ontario in Canada and Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan in the United States. Its water eventually flows through the St. Marys River into Lake Huron.
Although Lake Superior is the largest Great Lake by volume and surface area, Lake Baikal contains much more freshwater overall. Lake Michigan is the only other Great Lake located entirely within the United States.
