Which Great Lake did the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sink in during 1975?

The story behind the answer

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior during a storm on November 10, 1975.

The American bulk carrier was transporting taconite iron-ore pellets from Superior, Wisconsin, to a steel mill near Detroit. It disappeared with all 29 crew members aboard, making it one of the best-known shipwrecks in Great Lakes history.

The wreck lies about 530 feet (160 meters) below the surface near the Canada–United States border. The exact cause remains debated, although heavy seas, flooding, structural stress, and shoaling have all been examined.

The disaster is often confused with the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, another major maritime catastrophe. Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot’s 1976 song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” helped make the sinking internationally famous.
