Fun Home is Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir about her relationship with her father.
Published in 2006, Fun Home examines Bechdel’s childhood, her coming out as a lesbian, and her complicated relationship with her father, Bruce Bechdel. Her father taught English and directed a funeral home, which gives the memoir its title and contributes to its layered exploration of family life, secrecy, and memory.
The book is structured through recurring references to literature, including works by James Joyce, Marcel Proust, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. These literary parallels help Bechdel interpret family events rather than simply presenting them in chronological order.
Fun Home received wide critical acclaim and was adapted into a musical with a book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and music by Jeanine Tesori. The musical won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2015. Bechdel later wrote Are You My Mother?, a separate graphic memoir focused on her mother.
