Which grandson of Genghis Khan founded the Yuan dynasty?

The story behind the answer

Kublai Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan, founded the Yuan dynasty.

Kublai was the second son of Tolui, Genghis Khan’s youngest son, making him one of the great khan’s grandsons. He became khagan in 1260 after the death of his older brother Möngke, though his succession led to a civil war with his younger brother Ariq Böke.

In 1271, Kublai formally proclaimed the dynastic name Great Yuan and established a Mongol-led dynasty based in China. He claimed the political succession of earlier Chinese dynasties and used Chinese imperial institutions alongside Mongol traditions. The conquest of the Southern Song was completed in 1279, making Kublai the first non-Han ruler to control all of China proper.

The other options were also important Mongol rulers but not founders of the Yuan. Batu founded the Golden Horde, Hulagu founded the Ilkhanate in Iran, and Möngke was Kublai’s older brother and predecessor as khagan.
