Which Grand Slam tournament awards the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup?

The story behind the answer

The Australian Open awards the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup to its men’s singles champion.

The trophy is named for Sir Norman Everard Brookes, an Australian tennis champion who won the Australasian Championships in 1911 and Wimbledon in 1907 and 1914. He later became president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, helping shape the organization that governed Australian tennis.

The Australian Open began in 1905 under earlier names, including the Australasian Championships and Australian Championships. The tournament is now held at Melbourne Park and is the first Grand Slam event of the calendar year. Its men’s singles trophy is a perpetual cup: winners’ names are inscribed on it, while the champion receives a miniature replica to keep.

The wording can cause confusion because the Norman Brookes Cup is not the overall trophy for every Australian Open event. The women’s singles champion receives the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup. Wimbledon has its own gentlemen’s singles trophy, the US Open awards the US Open Championship Trophy, and the French Open awards the Coupe des Mousquetaires.
