Which Grand Slam tennis tournament is played at Stade Roland Garros?
Answer
French Open
Answer
French Open
The Grand Slam tennis tournament played at Stade Roland Garros is the French Open.
Also called Roland-Garros, the French Open is held in Paris and is the only Grand Slam played on outdoor clay courts. Its slow, high-bouncing surface creates long rallies and makes movement, patience and topspin especially important. The tournament is traditionally held from late May into early June.
The event began as the French Championships in 1891, initially for members of French tennis clubs. It moved to the newly built Stade Roland Garros in 1928, after French tennis officials needed a venue for defending the Davis Cup. The stadium was named for Roland Garros, a French aviator and World War I hero.
A common mix-up is treating Roland-Garros as a separate tournament from the French Open. In English, “French Open” is the familiar name, while “Roland-Garros” refers both to the tournament and its Paris venue. Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the US Open are the other three Grand Slam events.
