Which Gospel records Jesus raising Jairus’s daughter from the dead?
Answer
All three Synoptic Gospels
Answer
All three Synoptic Gospels
Jesus raising Jairus’s daughter from the dead is recorded in all three Synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Mark 5, Matthew 9, and Luke 8 tell versions of the episode. Jairus, a synagogue leader, asks Jesus to help his dying daughter. By the time Jesus arrives, the girl is reported dead, but Jesus takes her by the hand and restores her to life. Mark and Luke preserve the Aramaic words “Talitha koum,” commonly translated “Little girl, get up.”
Matthew’s shorter account places the episode within a compressed sequence and describes the girl as already dead when Jairus approaches Jesus. Mark and Luke narrate the interruption involving the woman who touches Jesus’ clothing in greater detail.
The story is distinct from Jesus’ raising of Lazarus in John and from the raising of the widow’s son at Nain in Luke. Those episodes involve different people and locations.
