Which golfer won The Open at Royal Birkdale in 2017? Jordan Spieth won the championship at Royal Birkdale.
Spieth claimed the 146th Open Championship from 20 to 23 July 2017 in Southport, England. He finished at 268, 12 under par, three strokes ahead of Matt Kuchar. The victory gave the American his third major title, following the 2015 Masters and 2015 U.S. Open.
The final round became one of the most memorable finishes in recent Open history. Spieth briefly lost his lead after trouble at the 13th hole, where his tee shot finished far right and he had to take an unplayable lie. He recovered with a bogey, then regained momentum with a birdie at the 14th and a 48-foot eagle putt at the par-five 15th.
Spieth closed with birdies at the 16th and 17th before making par at the last. Royal Birkdale hosted its first Open in 1954, and the 2017 edition was the tenth held there. Spieth’s win also made him, alongside Jack Nicklaus, one of only two golfers to have won three legs of the career Grand Slam before turning 24.
