Which goddess was the sister of Isis and mother of Anubis?
Answer
Nephthys
Answer
Nephthys
Nephthys was the sister of Isis and, in some Egyptian myths, the mother of Anubis.
Nephthys was one of the children of Geb, the earth god, and Nut, the sky goddess. Her siblings included Isis, Osiris, and Set. She was associated with mourning, darkness, protection, childbirth, healing, and the dead. Alongside Isis, she guarded Osiris and protected the deceased during funerary rites.
The connection to Anubis comes mainly from later mythological traditions, especially versions in which Nephthys conceives Anubis with Osiris. Anubis became the jackal-headed god of embalming and funerary rituals. Egyptian traditions were not uniform, however: some sources identify Isis or Bastet as Anubis's mother. That variation does not make the quiz answer unfair, because Nephthys is the standard answer to this particular pairing of clues.
Nephthys is often confused with Isis because the two goddesses appear together as mourners and protectresses. Their roles were complementary: Isis was strongly linked with motherhood and restoration, while Nephthys was especially connected with mourning, guardianship, and the boundary between life and death.
