Which goddess was the devourer of hearts in the underworld judgment?

The story behind the answer

Ammit was the devourer of hearts in ancient Egypt’s underworld judgment.

In the Judgment of the Dead, Anubis guided the deceased to the scales, where the person’s heart was weighed against the feather of Ma’at, the principle of truth and cosmic order. Thoth recorded the result, while Osiris presided over the judgment. If the heart was judged morally unworthy, Ammit consumed it.

Ammit’s name means “Devourer of the Dead.” Egyptian artists commonly portrayed her as a composite creature with a crocodile’s head, a lion’s forequarters, and a hippopotamus’s hindquarters—the three animals regarded as especially dangerous in Egypt. This fearsome combination symbolized total destruction.

A common mix-up is treating Ammit as an ordinary goddess of worship. She was more often understood as a terrifying guardian demon associated with the Duat, the Egyptian underworld. Unlike the blessed dead, her victims suffered a “second death” and could not continue to the afterlife.
