Which god was the god of magic and medicine?
Answer
Heka
Answer
Heka
Heka was the ancient Egyptian god and divine personification of magic and medicine.
In Egyptian thought, heka was more than stage magic or superstition. It was a sacred power woven into creation and available to gods, kings, priests, healers, and ordinary people. Egyptians used the same word for the force itself, the rituals that employed it, and the deity who embodied it. Heka therefore belonged naturally in both religious ceremonies and medical treatment.
The Coffin Texts describe Heka as existing before the world had fully separated into opposites. Egyptian creation traditions also treated magical power as part of the force that brought life and order into being. Spells, spoken names, amulets, medicines, and protective rituals could all be understood as applications of heka. Healing was not sharply separated from religion: a remedy might be accompanied by a spoken formula invoking divine protection.
Heka had a cult center at Esna and was eventually portrayed as a youthful god, sometimes wearing a distinctive crown and carrying royal symbols. Isis was also famously called Weret-Hekau, “Great of Magic,” so she can appear in questions about Egyptian magic. That title reflects her magical ability, whereas Heka is the canonical deity representing magic and medicine itself.
