Which god was the earth god lying beneath Nut? Geb was the Egyptian earth god traditionally portrayed beneath Nut, the sky goddess.
In the Heliopolitan Ennead, Geb was the son of Shu and Tefnut and the brother and husband of Nut. Mythological images show him reclining below her arched body, while Shu separates the two. Their separation established the boundary between earth and sky and made room for the created world.
Geb represented both the fertile soil that supported crops and the earth associated with burial and the underworld. Ancient Egyptians believed his laughter caused earthquakes, and barley was poetically said to grow from his body. He was also connected with snakes, vegetation, kingship, and the land of Egypt.
The most important family connection is that Geb and Nut became the parents of Osiris, Isis, Seth, and Nephthys. Their descendants dominate the Osiris cycle. A common mistake is to identify Nut as the earth figure because she is often shown close to the ground; in Egyptian symbolism, however, Nut is the sky and Geb is the earth.
