Which goalkeeper won the Champions League with both Ajax and Manchester United?
Answer
Edwin van der Sar
Answer
Edwin van der Sar
Edwin van der Sar won the Champions League with both Ajax and Manchester United. He lifted the trophy with Ajax in 1995 and with Manchester United in 2008.
Van der Sar was Ajax’s starting goalkeeper in the 1995 final, when Louis van Gaal’s young side defeated Milan 1–0 in Vienna. Patrick Kluivert scored the only goal, making Ajax European champions for the fourth time. Van der Sar also played in the 1996 final, but Ajax lost to Juventus on penalties.
After spells with Juventus and Fulham, he joined Manchester United in 2005. In the 2008 final in Moscow, United drew 1–1 with Chelsea and won the shoot-out 6–5. Van der Sar saved Nicolas Anelka’s decisive penalty.
Peter Schmeichel is a tempting alternative because he also won the competition with Manchester United, but he did not win it with Ajax. Van der Sar is the goalkeeper who achieved the Ajax–Manchester United double.
